Body Protectors at Derby House
Riding is a high risk sport no matter how careful we are, accidents do happen. Body protectors are foam filled 'vests' and can be worn over the top of other clothing or under a jacket. They offer protection from impact caused by a fall. This may be from hitting the ground, tree, car etc. Fallers may also be kicked or trodden on by a horse. More accidents happen whilst out hacking than riding cross-country so it is advisable to wear a body protector at all times - not just when competing.
Second had body protectors should be avoided. If these have been subject to a fall or kick, the protection will be diminished - even if they appear to be in tack. Any body protector which is dented or damaged should be replaced immediately.
Level 1
Black Label - offers low level protection which is only considered appropriate for licence jockeys.
Level 2
Brown Label - offers protection for low risk situations. These do NOT include riding on roads or other hard surfaces or riding over jumps.
Level 3
Purple Label - provides a level of protection suitable for normal horse riding and competitions.
Like riding hats, the effectiveness of a body protector depends on being correct for the job and on ensuring that the fit of the garment is correct.
The body protector should be tried on over light clothing. Try to simulate all riding positions to make sure that you will be comfortable when mounted. The body protector should be a snug fit so that it doesn't move when you are wearing it and doesn't slip if you have a fall.
Many makes of body protector have a separate front and back section which zip or velcro together. Many ladies find that best fit is achieved by choosing a larger front section.
When choosing a body protector for a child, it is important to get the correct size. The child's safety may be compromised by selecting a larger size in the hope that they will "grow into it". You wouldn't endanger the child by choosing a larger riding hat and the same applies to a body protector.
Body protectors should be replaced every 3-4 years as the foam padding may start to degrade.
