Why not celebrate midsummer in style this year? Derby House Post has selected some of the best equestrian events that offer more than just horses and take place during some of the longest (and hopefully warmest!) days of the year.

Runaway to the circus

Take the family and a proper picnic and enjoy an early evening performance of Gifford’s Circus. This show of delightfully old-fashioned entertainment includes party pieces from clowns, dancing gymnasts, jugglers, horses of various sizes as well as geese and chickens and should be on everyone’s list of must do’s. Although it is based during the summer in locations around Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire the circus will be based in Chiswick from 11 to 24th June.

Jump to it

The Ashford Farm Bolesworth CSI4* International (18-21st June) in the grounds of Bolesworth Castle (10miles from Chester) is not just about showjumping although spectators and showjumping diehards will be able to enjoy four days of international jumping at its best.

On Thursday the arena hosts dressage to music and on Friday Express Eventing. Saturday night is the big one; Gladiators kicks off the evening that culminates in a concert with Scouting for Girls heading the bill. For the full Bolesworth experience camping on site is now available.

Join the jet set

Enjoy international Polo and a Country Fair at the Gloucestershire Festival hosted by the Beaufort Club (1314th June), Westonbirt (just outside Tetbury).

On Saturday the Audi England team will take on Ireland in the second test match of the English season. The highlight of the polo action is the charity polo match on Sunday. Last year the Piaget team that included Prince Harry and 10 goal Argentine Facundo Pieres, defeated the Duke of Cambridge’s Royal Salute team.

Spectators can also enjoy demonstrations and a tented shopping village. Gates open at 10am and the main match played at 3pm.

Take to the beach

How about a weekend of polo in Cornwall? The ‘GWR Polo on the Beach’ takes place in the beautiful setting of Watergate Bay (26– 28th June) and is free to watch.

As well as polo matches each day, see the Devils Horseman display team and buy a ticket for the first ever GWR Polo on the beach party on Saturday 27th June. As well as a bar and champagne garden there will be a beach hut barbeque and street food vendors plus live music from Duke followed by international DJ Krystal Roxx.

Dig out the top hat and tails

The highlight of the racing year has to be Royal Ascot (16-20th June) but with just a month to go tickets are selling fast.

Dress up and get the wicker hamper out for a picnic with style, or give yourself a treat with a meal in one of the fine dining restaurants. After racing stay on for live music.

Catch the midnight sun

For the ultimate midsummer experience how about a midnight ride in the lands of the midnight sun; Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Lapland.

UK tour operators as well as those in Scandinavia all offer holidays that include a once in a lifetime midnight ride, some are even in the Arctic Circle.

For the unstoppable outdoor enthusiast Unicorn Trails offers ‘Summer wilderness in Lapland’, a whole week of riding through forests, streams and fields, camping or staying in a wilderness cabin.
