A Welsh Section-C pony climbed up the ranks at the BSPS Summer Championships (August 27-29) at Arena UK, Lincolnshire, to stand overall supreme — thought to be the first time a native breed has achieved this accolade.

Sarah Parker produced Mr Hall’s Menai Thomas to perfection to take the open Heritage working hunter pony title, novice WHP reserve, their Olympia ridden mountain and moorland section, supreme Heritage WHP and finally the overall title.

“I’ve been showing at these championships for 28 years and I’ve never won the supreme — I’m still pinching myself,” said Parker, who described the experience as “a truly unforgettable time”.

Menai Thomas is an 11-year-old is by Talon Tomos out of Menai Cadi Fach. Although he is a working stallion, he hasn’t covered this year because Parker has been concentrating on working hunter pony classes, as it is his first season in these sections.

“He loves his jumping and is a real perfectionist, but I have to keep him confident and not scare him,” confided Parker.

Thomas is accustomed to the winner’s enclosure, though, having finished best of breed at Olympia three years ago.

There was more success for the team at the BSPS Championships, with Katy Marks’s Hardendale Ray and Melanie Alford’s Nire Valley Charlie both winning, James Painter and Deerpark Barthy heading the 15hh Gold Cup section and the Joyners’ Welsh section-A Sarum Rembrandt landing the prestigious Olympia title.
