A 10-year-old Welsh section A stallion has won his class at the Royal Welsh Show for the third year running — thought to be a unique achievement.
Owned and ridden by India Latter, Powys Sprite looked fabulous and strutted his stuff to perfection in the famous Builth Wells show ring.
“He’s a little legend,” said Latter. “And it was great that Mum and Dad were there to see us do it [at the Royal Welsh], too.”
Powys Sprite, by Lacy Sable out of Heniarth Quinnell, stood HOYS ridden section A pony of the year last October and qualified for this year’s Birmingham final at the TSR Spring Show in April.
He and Latter have had a fantastic 2015 season, winning the HOYS class and their working hunter pony section at Northleach at the end of June. They stood overall ridden champion there and, going up against the in-hand champion, the three-year-old Welsh section D filly London Olympic Rose, claimed the overall supreme. This was only the third time a ridden pony has taken the top title in Northleach’s 51-year history.
Now Latter and Sprite will be aiming for another hat-trick — they have won the National Welsh Championships ridden section A for the past two years.
